Miniature portraits were the predecessors to photographs. Families would commission a likeness of loved ones to carry with them while away from home, traveling, or every day for the very smitten! Once photography became more developed, the trend dropped off, but the appeal of jewelry with a miniature painting still held appeal. Miniatures were made of stylized scenery and subjects, and remained popular throughout the Victorian and Edwardian Eras. During the 1930s-1950s, hand painted miniature pendants and brooches were produced featuring stylized feminine ideals from bygone days, and our antebellum beauty is just such an example. Wearing a voluminous pink ballgown, she looks wistfully over her shoulder, as if hoping she'll be asked to join in the next reel. She has ribbons woven through her crimped hair, suggesting the style of the 1860s and a long, elegant neck with a string of pearls. The pearls and accents on the dress are reverse painted on the glass front, a technique typical of this vintage style. A wonderful piece from Kathy's personal collection, she is sure to keep your dance card full when you wear her!
