 Animals have been used at motifs in jewelry for centuries, from the Ancient Egyptians, to Native Americans, and especially noted in the Victorian Era, when Prince Albert presented Queen Victoria with her famous snake engagement ring. The trend has never died, with a wide variety of creatures turned into beautiful and fanciful adornment.

During the middle of the twentieth century, jewelers enjoyed producing elaborate whimsical brooches with precious stones. Primarily worn during the day for luncheons, teas and matinees, these pieces were the perfect touch on a suit lapel or the collar of a dress coat.
