In Greek mythology, the Three Graces were the daughters of Zeus and the nymph Eurynome and they presided over dances, banquets, and all pleasurable social events. They were believed to bring goodwill to both gods and mortals and to endow artists and poets with the ability to create beautiful works of art. The Graces were named Euphrosyne (Mirth), Aglaia (Elegance) and Thalia (Beauty).
This large shell cameo brooch depicts the Graces while dancing. Carved with stylized, elongated forms, they clasp arms while two hold a laurel crown above the head of the central figure. A gorgeous piece sure to inspire all poets, artists and lovers!
