Although diamond engagement rings among the aristocracy were common from the 15th century and on, it wasn't a widespread practice until the Victorian Era. A popular design was the "daisy", a solitaire diamond surrounded by smaller diamonds to represent a flower. Daisies were associated with loyalty, purity and innocence, the very attributes sought after in a new bride.
Today, this style of ring is not reserved for matrimonial wear only. Cocktail rings and rings intended for the middle or index fingers are often designed in the flower-like shape, and are appropriate to wear for any occasion.
This dainty daisy ring, circa 1920, is set in 18 karat white gold, with a yellow gold shank. Eight old European cut diamonds surround a central old European cut, forming the low profile ring top. Elegant, sparkly, and very comfortable to wear!
