This Retro brooch circa 1935-1950 is made of 18 karat yellow, white and rose gold, with accents of diamonds, rubies and sapphires. This was a popular combination of stones during this period when platinum was banned due to the war effort and gold ruled the day. Much copper was alloyed with the gold giving the metal from this period a warmer, rosier tone. But the use of contrasting gold tones was also exploited due to the lack of platinum and the desire to distinguish themselves from the white golds of the preceding Art Deco period. While larger gemstones were harder to import during wartime, the use of smaller specimens of many colored stones were favored.
Also notable, in the jewelry of this period, are the broad scrolls and volutes in highly polished surfaces that created jewels of striking presence. While the war waged, a strong market in precious gold was formed as people shied away from currencies and invested in gold. Many historical jewels were, no doubt, melted to satisfy the demand of the day.
This superb example is definitely a jewel of its time. Now highly collectible and hard to find, it is surely a piece to be treasured and worn with pride! A wonderful accent to your coat, or in lieu of a boutonniere for a gentleman's jacket; anyone would be happy to catch this bouquet!
