Hand painted miniature portraits were the predecessors of photographs. When there was no other way to record a likeness of someone, the miniatures were treasured and passed down in families. Some portrait miniatures were painted of a specific person, and others were of classic style beauties rather than a particular real person. Often, these pieces were made into jewelry and worn as decoration, such as our pendant . The Victorians loved romantic depictions of pastoral scenes, and this is such an example.
This circa 1830 French Provincial locket has a lovely little scene of a maiden dancing in a field with a scarf. Most likely a depiction of a country celebration of Spring, it has a joyful air that we are obsessed with! Embellished with black and white 'polka dot' enameling and natural seed pearls, it is truly a treasure for your collection!
