Antique Austro-Hungarian Silver & Multi-Stone Cross Pendant With Antique Box

Austria-Hungary was a constitutional monarchy that was created in 1867 and was dissolved in 1918. During this short period of time, many opulent, dramatic pieces of jewelry were produced. Close in proximity to Germany and Italy, Renaissance Revival style was a significant influence. Gothic, Biblical and Mythical themes were prevalent, as was the use of closely clustered jewels, both genuine and paste.
This wonderful cross pendant is crafted in silver, incorporating natural pearls, turquoise, tourmaline, amethyst and aquamarine stones into the design. The reverse reveals a double bale intended to thread a ribbon through which could also accommodate a thin chain. The box is antique and English in origin, from the SJ Phillips company in London. The fitted section was customized at some point after the piece of jewelry was made. A dramatic and special piece, sure to conjure your inner Romantic!
