The technique of enameling on jewelry originated in Limoges, France during the 16th century, and was perfected in the 17th century, bringing fame to the region where it is still recognized for beautiful enameled pieces today. The process involves applying a white base over a copper or gold disc, then using ground glass pigments, it is applied and fired. In this piece, the enamel has been foiled, giving the scene a depth and saturation that really glows!
Our sublime Limoges pendant is crafted in resplendent 18 karat yellow gold complete with leafy vines, flowers, and the quintessential French bow, she also enjoys a luscious faceted garnet drop at the base. The hand painted enamel is in near perfect condition, with a tiny etch at the subject's decollete. Richly and artfully clothed, she dates to the turn of the century. Her sweet face has a subtlety that is one of the finest we have seen in this style and technique! The reverse is signed 'Issanchou', by Jean Baptiste Issanchou (1875-1960), a prolific French artist of the time. Truly a wonderful example of the iconic Limoges genre, and a keepsake that will become a treasured heirloom in your collection!
