Cannetille work was inspired by embroidery, reputedly the embroidery found in traditional peasant garments. Some sources mention 18th century Portugal or India as a source, some mention France. The simple filigree tendrils that started to appear in the fashion and jewelry world around 1820 transformed into cannetille during the following decade. One can find cannetille work from almost every European nation during the 1820s and 1830s.
Citrine is a stone that has been associated with optimism and happiness for centuries. Named for its golden yellow hue, it was a popular choice among jewelry lovers during the 19th century.
This incredible, sunny necklace is set in rich 18 karat yellow gold, with Cannetille work haloing each of the 21 graduating oval faceted citrines, each one linked with a flower motif. All original, with the clasp fitting invisibly into a citrine setting, it flows around the neck like a river of sparkling golden gems, hence the French term 'Riviere'. Truly a masterpiece of craftspersonship, you will find wearing it floods you with joy!
