Antique French Silver & 18K Gold, Seed Pearl Brooch/Pendant

Seed pearls are natural pearls that weigh less than a quarter of a grain. The name seed pearls was acquired for no other reason than their remarkable size — less than 2 mm in diameter. They are not called seed pearls because of any unique culturing process or anything unusual about their formation within the oyster. Antique seed pearls are entirely natural. During the reign of Queen Victoria pendants and brooches fashioned from seed pearls were immensely popular. Seed pearl jewellery was often associated with purity and so it was the natural choice of gift for young brides.
This delicate and elaborate brooch would have suited a wealthy Victorian bride very well. The shield inspired 18 karat gold setting is a work of art in itself, and is lavishly decorated with 118 seed pearls in varying sizes, finally ending in three lovely dangler drops at the base. We love the hidden hinged bale at the top, which adds that ever important element of versatility for the wearer! A perfect example of high style from the Victorian Era, it's a must for any collector of historic jewelry.
