Platinum is very strong. In addition, it does not tarnish, and it doesn’t corrode making it a highly prized metal and extremely suitable for the manufacturing of fine jewelry. The oldest known examples of the metal used in jewelry date back to 1200 BC, with traces of it found in Egyptian pieces. It became popular to the western world when King Louis XVI declared platinum the only metal for kings in 1786 and commissioned several pieces to be executed in the metal. The production of a more malleable platinum began in England during the early 1800s, and was utilized more frequently toward the turn of the century.
This beautiful, elegant brooch showcases a clear teardrop deep purple amethyst, (often called Siberian amethyst) framed with Art Nouveau-styled platinum topped 14 karat gold. Studded with diamonds and pearls, its symmetry and graceful lines swirl around the violet hued gem, creating a glittering diaphanous effect which offsets the amethyst perfectly. A lovely piece that resonates as much today as it did a hundred years ago!
