"Asclepius"
Antique 14K & Jasper Ware Wedgwood Brooch

Founded in 1759 by Josiah Wedgwood, the Wedgwood pottery company is still producing many of their original designs today. The familiar Jasper Ware, a white relief on a blue background is immediately recognizable and has often been referred to as "Wedgwood Blue".
Asclepius is the ancient Greek hero and god of medicine. He is always depicted as carrying the rod of Asclepius, a snake entwined staff which remains a symbol of medicine today.
The Archangel Metatron is a celestial scribe recording all human choices in the heavenly Book of Life. Like Asclepius, she is depicted with a symbol of her purpose, a pen.
This Wedgwood brooch is rather unusual, in that it is two sided. Set in 14 karat yellow gold, it shows Asclepius with his staff on the front and Metatron with her pen on the reverse. Wedgwood pieces have the date numbers stamped on the back, but we are unable to read them in this case, as they have been covered by setting them back to back. A wonderful, symbolic brooch perfect for any healer, with a hidden allegory just for the wearer!
