Historically, lockets were first worn as amulets, with tokens of good luck stored inside. One of the earliest known examples of a locket with a picture in it is Queen Elizabeth I’s ring (ca. 1575) containing a portrait of herself on one side and her mother Anne Boleyn on the other. During the Victorian Era, it became popular to wear them with not only miniature portraits, but locks of hair, ashes, perfumed fabric, and sometimes even poison! The locket has never gone out of style; in modern times you will usually find a photograph inside.
This vintage locket necklace is heart shaped, an apt design to hold treasured photographs of loved ones. Made of 14 karat yellow gold, it has a brushed surface, a favored metal finish during the 1950s and 1960s. Gold roping creates a ruffled dais for a glittering diamond, reminiscent of a box of Valentine's chocolates. Open the pendant, and you will find two recesses for photos, as well as a center golden frame, room enough for four images to hold inside! A wonderful piece to keep your precious pictures close to your heart, in your heart! Hung on a 29 1/2" chain, it looks great layered with other necklaces and chains.
