A Belcher setting (developed circa 1850-1890) is a style unique to American rings, named after the American designer Thomas Belcher. The defining feature is how the stone is secured into the ring, using prongs or claws that are cut into the shank of the ring, so that the stone does not extend above the circumference of the shank. Most Belcher-style mountings have a round dip between the prongs at their base. This style is also referred to as a 'buttercup" setting, due to the floral like appearance the prongs create on the ring's face.
Featuring three glowing opals and six accent sapphires, this vintage Belcher set ring has a wonderfully comfortable shank and works when styling for both day and night. A great find for any opal collector!
