During the straight-laced Victorian Era, it was not deemed proper to vocalize your affections for a love interest. Because of societal restrictions, the language of flowers became popular. Different blossoms were associated with emotional sentiments, and lovers and friends expressed their feelings for each other by sending and wearing flowers, thus communicating in code. Towards the latter part of the era, most people were aware of the meanings of different blossoms, yet the sentimental Victorians continued to utilize the symbolism in the Language of Flowers.
