Between the Franco-Prussian War and World War I, 1871- 1914, much of Europe enjoyed a period of peace, prosperity, optimism, rapid developments in science and technology, and relative political stability. It was "the beautiful era" (Belle Epoque), a golden age, a time best characterized by the expression joie de vivre (from the title of a book by Émile Zola). Jewelry styles turned toward nature, with Art Nouveau influencing a more flowing line as well as botanical motifs. Classic Greek and Roman mythology was still a much admired and studied subject, and the jewelry from this era continued to include figures from myths.
Adonis was a beautiful, androgynous mortal man, who enjoyed love affairs with several of the Greek gods: Persephone, Apollo, Heracles, Dionysus, and most lastingly, Aphrodite the goddess of love herself! When Adonis expired due to a wound from a wild boar, Aphrodite held him in her arms and wept. Her tears mingled with his blood, and anenome flowers bloomed as the bloodied tears fell to the ground.
Only such a dramatic and evocative tale would befit the subject matter for this incredible piece of jewelry! Time consuming and delicate, carving an opal is no simple task. Even the most talented of cameo artists would avoid using this material, as it has no pliancy and no room for error. This sublime opal cameo depicts a shimmering Adonis in profile and is framed in 18 karat gold undulating leaves. The reverse is etched with a floral design that has an anenome at its center, with a delicate golden chain attached. A museum-quality work of wearable art, and a piece to treasure for all the generations to come!
