The Belle Epoque, or 'Beautiful Age' (Fr.), was a period of peace and prosperity, with artistic expression taking the forefront in many forms of life, including fashion and jewelry. The timeframe for this era is 1871 - 1914, just before the onset of WWI. In America, this period is referred to as 'The Gilded Age'. The Industrial Revolution stimulated the economy, making it possible for the middle classes to purchase luxuries like jewelry and fashionable adornments.
The navette ring was one of the many styles that was in vogue for a time during the expansive Victorian era. Literally meaning 'little ship', the design is shaped like a tiny little ship. It's elongated and pointed at the ends, giving an elegant and timeless look to the wearer.
Our example is unique in that it contains both open and foiled back diamonds. Crafted in 18 karat yellow gold, with Sterling silver settings, the central diamond is approximately .56 carats, with approximately 1.3 carats of old mine cut and foiled back rose cut diamonds. Dating from around 1880, it will lend a classic, romantic air to any ensemble!
