Antique French 18K, Silver, Enamel & Diamond Paste Plaque Ring
Antique paste stones took quite a lot of skill to produce and became very popular, with Marie Antoinette appointing a specific craftsman to make the jewels for her Court. The use of paste remained common in fine jewelry, with Georgians and Victorians preferring to travel with less valuable adornments, as highway robbery was common. Trendy and fun, they were worn for all sorts of occasions and regarded as an important fashion accessory. The plaque ring, meaning 'plate' in French, became popular as well, since Marie Antoinette sported a blue enameled one, and many were produced during her reign and after, both with precious stones and with paste.
This darling plaque ring was produced approximately around the late 18th century, and incorporates diagonal stripes of bright cobalt blue and paste diamonds. A low profile, fun and historic ring you'll love to have in your collection!
