Cannetille work was inspired by embroidery, reputedly the embroidery found in traditional peasant garments. Some sources mention 18th century Portugal or India as a source, some mention France. The simple filigree tendrils that started to appear in the fashion and jewelry world around 1800 transformed into cannetille during the following decade.
The Archeologic Revival period was spurred by the travels of wealthy Englishmen visiting classical cities and their artifacts. A craze for all things ancient ensued, and the designs were reintroduced to the jewelry industry.
This magnificent pendant has beautifully crafted elements of both styles. The top element has a large amethyst framed by richly hued gold Cannetille work, with the middle amethyst framed in the Archeological Revival style. Finally, a glittering amethyst briolette is set in scrolls, a perfect complement to the other two elements. It's easy to imagine a fine lady wearing this pendant at her decolletage, the purple gem reflecting subtly in the candlelight. Dramatic and elaborate, a piece you'll treasure in your collection!
