Antique 18K Hand Painted Porcelain Brooch

Hand painted miniature portraits were the predecessors of photographs. When there was no other way to record a likeness of someone, the miniatures were treasured and passed down in families. Some portrait miniatures were painted of a specific person, and others were of classic style beauties rather than a particular real person. Often, these pieces were made into jewelry and worn as decoration, such as our ring. The Victorians loved to collect pieces from travels to other countries, and this little gem is most likely a souvenir piece.
Beautifully and ornately framed in 18 karat yellow gold with scrolls, boules, ogees and leaves, the hand painted porcelain is like a tiny art work in a museum! Two ladies gaze out at the viewer with clasped hands. They are wearing costumes from a 'peasant region', probably Italy or Switzerland. Masterfully painted with a serene feeling, the artist definitely had an elevated knowledge of color! Bright, pleasing, and a must-have for any antique jewelry collector!
