Antique French 18K & Hand Painted Enamel Locket Pendant

Hand painted miniature portraits were the predecessors of photographs. When there was no other way to record a likeness of someone, the miniatures were treasured and passed down in families. Some portrait miniatures were painted of a specific person, and others were of classic style beauties rather than a particular real person. Often, these pieces were made into jewelry and worn as decoration, such as our brooch. The Victorians loved romantic depictions of classical Greek and Roman scenes, Medieval figures, and Fairy Tale scenes.
This stunning French locket is a real treasure! Crafted in 18 karat yellow gold, with elements of Archaeological Revival style, it has shell motifs, boules, scrolls, and a fantastically, frivolous bow at the top! The hand painted enamel delights us with a classical beauty, most likely the Muse Erato, who is typically depicted holding a golden lyre. A precious piece with a safe compartment to hold photos, a lock of hair or a tiny pressed flower, she is sure to become a favorite in your collection!
