"I'll Be Wary"
Antique 15K & Amethyst Intaglio Watch Fob

Victorian gentlemen tended to decorate their watch chains with fobs. Watches were worn in the waistcoat pocket, with a chain attached for easy access. The fob helped to add a counterweight so the chain wouldn't be pulled by the heavier watch. Some fobs were merely ornamental, and others held a practical purpose, used to stamp in sealing wax on letters. This watch fob, elaborate and showy, has a gorgeous body of 15 karat yellow gold, embellished with scrolls, flowers, leaves, and clusters of grapes. The carved amethyst intaglio shows a coat of arms with the words, 'I'll be wary' in reverse. The coat of arms has a Dexter hand, couped at the wrist holding a dagger. This, and the motto, has been attributed to the Finlay family of Castle Toward (built in 1820), Greenock, Scotland. A wonderful piece of beautifully crafted history that any serious antique jewelry collector will covet!
