A sugarloaf cabochon gemstone gets its name from the distinct rounded shape that slopes upward from a flat base, resembling the shape refined sugar was formed into up until the late nineteenth century. These parcels were called sugar loaves, hence the name. Rarely seen in modern jewelry production, it is a favorite among Victorian jewel collectors.
