In the Victorian era, the language of flowers was a vital part of communication for everyone. Each flower in a bouquet had a significant meaning and conveyed a message with no need for written or spoken words. Flower motifs were incorporated into jewelry and could be given or worn to indicate the same meaning as fresh blooms.
It was said that if you stepped on seven daisies at one time, you knew that Summer had arrived and that dreaming of daisies in Spring would bring good luck, but bad in Winter. Long associated with love, they also believed that picking the first daisy of the season would fill you with romantic desire, and sleeping with a daisy under your pillow would encourage the return of an absent lover.
The pansy flower represents the thoughts of lovers, shared before a word is spoken. Named for the French word for “thought” (pensee), the pansy was said to be a charmed flower, possessing telepathic magic. Attending to the plucked bloom, you could hear your lover's thoughts.
This wonderful brooch has everything a Victorian could ask for: gold repousse work, seed pearls, enameling, flowers, danglers and chains! Crafted in 14 karat yellow gold, utilizing the repousse technique, it has been embellished with bright blue enameling, which is intact. The central element is a pearl encrusted daisy. Amongst the leafy flourishes you will find two pansies tucked in, and finally, two chains which form a swag at the bottom and are finished with large repousse caps. A magnificent piece that any Romantic would be thrilled to wear!
